Management Information System

Management:

  • how do you use information in managing a business

  • how does new information technology affect management

  • how do the new ways of thinking drawn from information technology affect management

  • management in an economy based on information

Information:

  • how do you manage information

  • what kinds of information do we want to manage

  • how does our information handling technology affect what we do with information

Systems:

  • we think of computer-based systems and electronic information handling

  • many computer-based systems are rationalized non-computer information systems

  • two key questions arise from this

  • what difference does it make to computerize and rationalize

  • what are the computer-based models, and how are they different from other management models

  • thus we have three components to systems:

  • technology component (what information handling is available)

  • knowledge management component (what non-computer systems do we have)

  • metaphor component (how does the computer make a difference)

There are two parts of course First, we look at information technology, because MIS is really about how electronic information handling affects business management .

Look first at components of information management technology

  • Understand basic technology enough to make reasonable decisions

  • Realize what information technology does for you, and to you

  • By using information technology, you learn to think differently about job

  • Important to select and implement information technology intelligently

  • Information functions should not be left to technical people alone

Management Information System

Management Information Iystems (MIS) are information systems (A business application of the computer. It is made up of the database, application programs and manual and machine procedures. It also encompasses the computer systems that do the processing), typically computer-based, that are used within an organization. An information system is "a system consisting of the network of all communication channels used within an organization". A management information system may also be defined as "a system that collects and processes data (information) and provides it to managers at all levels who use it for decision making, planning, program implementation, and control." An information system is comprised of all the components that collect, manipulate, and disseminate data or information. It usually includes hardware, software, people, communications systems such as telephone lines, and the data itself. The activities involved include inputting data, processing of data into information, storage of data and information, and the production of outputs such as management reports.
